Depending on your perspective, Paul Thomas Anderson is one of the finest or most self-indulgent writer/directors of his generation. Personally I go for the former, which is why I’m so excited to show you the first trailer for his latest feature – The Master. This is Anderson’s first film since the amazing There Will Be Blood in 2007, and charts the rise a cult-like religion across the United States in the fifties.

This is Joaquin Phoenix’s first role since he ‘retired’ and became a rambling bearded rapper, and my God, if this trailer is anything to go by, he’s come back better than ever. The menacing stare/smile/sneer. Wow. Oh, and that score. Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood returns with his unsettling discordant arrangements.

Phoenix plays Freddie Dutton, an alcoholic drifter who fall under the thrall of cult leader Lancaster Dodd (Philip Seymour Hoffman), rising through the ranks to become second in command before growing disenfranchised with The Master’s teachings and trying to leave the group.

The Master, also starring Amy Adams, is due for release in the US on the 12th October. There’s no UK date yet.
