News: Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master Has Amazing Second Trailer

Last month saw the first trailer for Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master, his first film in five years. It featured a magnetic Joaquin Phoenix, also on a return of sorts, as Freddie, a confused and drunken drifter. A month on and we are lucky to have our second trailer, this time focussing on The Master himself, Philip Seymour Hoffman.

Hoffman plays Lancaster Dodd, the man who develops a cult-like religion on the west coast of the United States. Dodd is apparently based on the founder of Scientology, L. Ron Hubbard, and those high up in the kooky little club have already seen a cut of the film in a way to avoid the inevitable controversy.

The clip once again features that fantastic eerie discordant score from Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood and has some wonderful lines – “I am a writer, a doctor, a nuclear physicist, a theoretical philosopher but above all I am a man, a hopelessly inquisitive man, just like you.” and Freddie’s “I know you’re trying to calm me down, but just say something that’s true!”. We also get a quick look at Amy Adams, who plays Dodd’s wife.

The Master is a film I am really looking forward to, and I am counting down the days to its release on the 12th October.

  1. Both trailers give me goosebumps. Phoenix and Hoffman look to be at the top of their came. And I love that neither trailers gives away too much plot details.
