News: Mad Max: Fury Road Finally About To Shoot?

As I stated way back in October when the first rumblings of production seemed to be grinding into action, George Miller’s Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior is leanest, meanest, and finest action movies ever made thanks to its brutal simplicity. Beyond Thunderdome we’ll try to forget. Anyway, it looks like Mad Max: Fury Road, the soon to be fourth film in the franchise, is FINALLY about to start shooting.

Initially due to shoot back in 2010 in Australia, Mad Max: Fury Road suffered a series of unfortunate setbacks. ‘Mad’ Mel Gibson had some more of his issues and dropped out production.  Tom Hardy was drafted in to replace him as Max Rockatansky. Then the Australian outback suffered from a series of torrential downpours that first flooded vast areas then brought life teeming back to usual sun-blasted desert. Of course, that doesn’t sit well with the Mad Max post-apocalyptic future, so a new location was needed. They eventually settled on Namibia.

Charlize Theron was cast way back in 2009 and had this to say at the premiere of Prometheus – “I leave in like two and a half weeks and we start shooting I think around mid-July in Namibia. I’m fucking dying, too, it’s been three years. It’s time to skin this cat already, so yeah, I’m very excited about it.”

When asked if it was the same script, Theron said – “Yes, exactly the same script. I know. It was more logistics. It was the fact that he (Director George Miller) had to finish Happy Feet. Then there was terrible floods in Australia, and the desert just never recovered from it. That sounds horrible. It did recover in a beautiful way, but not in a way that we needed it to, so that was a huge problem for us.”

Why did she sign up? – “I feel like the original Mad Max created such a vivid world, that to go back and re-imagine it and kind of replay in that sandbox sounds like fun to me. George really created a female character that I’ve never read anything like this. I mean, I’m scared shitless, yeah”

George Miller also wanted to shoot Fury Road in 3D but it looks like the harshness of the desert location and his use of ambitious crane/rig shots have put paid to that idea and the film will now be converted to 3D in post-production *spit*.

Are you excited to see a return for Mad Max to the big screen? Or do you wish they’d left the franchise well alone? Let us know your thoughts below.
