News: The Girl Who Played With Fire Will Not Be Out In 2013, Fincher May Still Direct

Sony’s version of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo didn’t exactly set cinema screens alight with its box office performance earlier in the year. It did enough, $232 million in global box office, to have people working on the follow-up The Girl Who Played With Fire (writer Steven Zallian is busy typing away) but Sony seem in no rush to get it made.

Both Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig are contracted to appear in the sequels as the series’ protagonists Lisbeth Salander and Mikael Blomkvist, but director David Fincher has no such assurances. After an apparently difficult time working with Sony’s execs during the production of Dragon Tattoo, it’s not a cast iron certainty he will return to the director’s chair. That said, after dropping out of making Cleopatra, and his version of 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea in development hell at Disney because of the mega-flop that was John Carter, it would appear he has a big gap in his schedule to fill. In an ace interview with The Art Of Title (which if you have any interest in films at all is a MUST READ), Fincher was asked what he was working on now and said “Well, trying to figure out a sequel to Dragon Tattoo. We’ve got to be able to make it our own thing.”

So Fincher isn’t completely out of the picture. I’m also glad he and Zallian seem to be working on making The Girl Who Played With Fire their own thing. Having read the book and seen the Swedish version, I have to say the story is A LOT weaker that Dragon Tattoo‘s. It all becomes a little silly with giant hulks who can’t feel pain, world boxing champions, and its storyline twist is very Empire Strikes Back. Its worst sin, though, it to keep Salander and Blomkvist apart for the entire story. If Fincher and Zallian can sort those problems with Stieg Larsson’s book, I’m fully onboard. But, hey, what do I know?

Here’s my review of Fincher’s The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. What did you thin of the film? Do you want Fincher back on the sequels? Or are you a crazy nut who thinks the series should be left alone? Let us know below.
