2012 marks the fiftieth year of super spy James Bond’s appearance on the glittering big screen. In that time the suave secret agent has helped evolve and shape the big brash action movie, making a star of grumpy Scotsman Sean Connery. As swift as Bond’s rise was his fall into camp parody with a raise of Roger Moore’s ridiculous eyebrow. He then turned serious and sullen with a serious and sullen Timothy Dalton, experienced a renaissance under the Irish charm of Pierce Brosnan, and finally a radical reboot and reinvention with latest incarnation, the ice-cold Daniel Craig (Oh, and an Aussie played him too, but you know, who cares). Somehow 007 has managed to stand the test of time and remain relevant while everything around him has changed. Or has he? Does Skyfall prove he still was it takes in the face of stiff competition from your Bournes and Batmans? Read on and find out. Continue reading

As I mentioned last week during my update on The Bourne Legacy, this is a bumper year for those of who enjoy our spy action thrillers. Skyfall is shaping up to be the best Bond film in a very long time (the IMAX trailer is mind-blowing) and the new trailer, released today, only serves to confirm that.

It’s truly exciting year for those of us who love our action-packed spy thrillers. Not only is Bond back but it seems he’s in top form with Skyfall (I saw the IMAX trailer before a showing of The Dark Knight Rises and was BLOWN AWAY), but we also have a return of the Bourne series with The Bourne Legacy. Replacing Matt Damon, Jeremy Renner now heads up the franchise as Operation Treadstone comes to an end and powerful forces try to tie up loose ends by disposing of their assets. Continue reading

FIFTY YEARS. That’s how long James Bond has been on our screens. Introduced at the height of the Cold War, he’s seen out communism, disco, and reinvented himself in the face of the world’s latest global threat – terrorism. It’s amazing that an amoral British state-sanctioned assassin could have this kind of lasting world-wide appeal. Or IS it? Anyway, Skyfall is the latest in the super spy’s adventures and last week saw the release of the new poster above. Along with the poster came the announcement of the first teaser trailer, and yes, we’ve managed to get our leather-gloved paws upon it. Would you like to see? Continue reading

Today I saw a plastic bag fluttering around in the wind. I admired its beauty and the elegance as it danced around on the breeze. Then it got hit by a car and I laughed because I have the sense of humour of a three-year old. Anyway, that was meant to be an allusion to Sam Mendes’ American Beauty, and also a really long and laboured way of getting to his latest film,  Skyfall. Continue reading
