News: Universal Pictures To Go Big With Franchises And Animation

It’s the one hundred year anniversary of Universal Pictures. If you’ve watched any of their films recently, it’s hard to escape the fact. The recent release of Jaws on Blu-Ray takes nearly sixteen years to begin for all the Universal promos banging on. Skip it? Yeah, you think you’re getting the movie and then they trick you with ANOTHER clip of a film you don’t want to see. I want the shark, not Robert Redford. I know, I’m being harsh, but don’t bug us with other films when we’ve paid good money for this one. Anyway, Universal Pictures CEO Steve Burke says they’re going to focus on “franchises and animation”. Continue reading

Review: The Grey

If you’d seen any of the marketing for The Grey, you’d be forgiven for thinking that the movie was just a dumb action flick where Liam Neeson tapes up his fists with broken glass and punches the shit out of some wolves. It’s certainly what I thought. But you’d be wrong. Director Joe Carnahan delivers a film that’s a hell of a lot more thoughtful and considered.

Review: Super 8

I like J.J. Abrams. He produced the silly but entertaining monster flick, Cloverfield. I think he did a great job directing Star Trek, making it exciting and relevant again. People say Lost, which he also produced, was quite good too, though I never watched it so I can’t comment. Super 8 sees him wear his writer, director, and producer hat under the watchful gaze of a certain Steven Spielberg. This HAS to be great… doesn’t it? Continue reading
