Is it fair to say that The Amazing Spider-Man is the least anticipated of this year’s superhero movies? Is it the thought of sitting through the origin story AGAIN, so soon after the last version, that’s putting us off? Or is it that it’s up against the likes of Whedon’s The Avengers and Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises which is dulling the impact of the webslinger? It maybe neither, it could be both. What I do know is that Sony is cranking up the hype machine in readiness for release and we are getting a lot of new stuff to pore over. Let’s get to it. Continue reading

Things are stepping up in The Amazing Spider-Man promo stakes. Last week saw the release of the latest trailer, which was so darn good it helped change my opinion of the movie. This week the first clip from Marc Webb’s superhero flick has been released to the public via the viral site www.markofthespider-man.com. You wanna see it? Of course you do. Continue reading

Since I set upon The Shootening’s new direction I’ve had little opportunity to talk about The Amazing Spider-Man. Has there been a dearth of news? The Dark Knight Rises and The Avengers seem to be making all the noise, just as the new Spidey entered post-production. Or has it been my own bias towards the film? I’ll be the first to say I love Sam Raimi’s movies (Well, Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2, the less said about 3 the better) and the thought of a reboot barely ten years after the first film did rankle somewhat. But, hey, it’s here, it’s happening, and it’s up to me to deal with it. So let’s have a look, shall we?

It’s a hell of a cast director Marc Webb has assembled for The Amazing Spider-Man Continue reading

Superman Returns…

(This blog was originally written on Myspace)

For the first time in what feels like AGES, I ventured to the local cinema and caught a moofie. It was Superman Returns, a film I’ve been stupidly excited aboot since, like, christmas or something. My review – It was good. Really good. But not great.

The set pieces were FANTASTIC, the plane rescue and saving of Metropolis were superbly done. Brandon Routh is eerily reminiscent of Christopher Reeve, playing Clark with warmth and Superman with strength and dignity. Kevin Spacey is brilliant as Lex Luthor, his performace the perfect level of ham and genuine menace. On the downside, it was a little long, there’s a plot spoiler point really irks my fanboy sensibilities, and the ending was a bit ‘fneh’.

In my personal superhero movie ranking, Superman Returns would come behind Spider-Man/Spider-Man 2, and Batman Begins, but far ahead of the likes of The Hulk and Daredevil.

So, go see it, i say! Even if it’s just to play ‘spot the Christ allegory’…
